Read our list of creative ways to give back
“No one has ever become poor from giving.”
Too often, we’re steered into believing that the most effective way to help others is to give them money. But, what if we just don’t have enough money to give? Luckily, you don’t need to have a lot of money to have a positive impact on others. Here are some creative ways to give back when you, yourself, don’t have a lot.
Donate blood
Did you know, every day, one out of seven people who go to hospital need blood. Your blood is even more valuable than money – it saves lives! By donating a unit of this “precious gift of life” to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), you can save up to three lives as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.
Anyone over 16 years old, weighing more than 50 kgs and deemed healthy to donate can donate a unit of blood every 8 weeks. For more information, visit https://sanbs.org.za/.
Declutter your closets, for a good cause
You may not have money to give but you probably have things you’re not using lying around your house, especially if you have kids – they always have old clothes and toys that aren’t being used anymore.
Spring clean your home and donate clothes, toys and books to a family or charity in need. This way, you can help people in need and have a cleaner home.
Offer your skills
If you have a valuable skill to offer charities or people in need, don’t hesitate to help! Perhaps you can offer a charity help with their marketing campaigns and admin or provide free tutoring to kids battling with school work
Grow a giving garden
Have you noticed how expensive fresh produce is nowadays? Growing your own fruits and veggies in your garden is very rewarding but, imagine being able to grow extra for others too! With so many people donating cans, grains and other food items to charity and those in need, you can help by providing fresh nutritious produce. So, if you have green fingers, make sure you grow a little extra for others.
Find a creative way that you can help others. This way, you will be more involved in helping directly as opposed to just donating money and not really seeing where it goes at the end of the day.
