Things that have become expensive in 2017

For many South Africans, it may seem as though salaries aren’t keeping up with inflation. Do you remember when you could fill up an entire trolley with groceries for less than R1000? Now you walk out the store with barely two packets of groceries for the same amount…

Insurance, cars, medical aid, bonds, clothing, dining, school fees – absolutely everything seems so expensive. Here’s a list of things that have become very expensive in South Africa in 2017, according to Statistics South Africa.

  1. The price of meat went up by 15%.
  2. The price of food and drink items also went up, including sugar, desserts and sweets (8.1%), hot beverages like coffee (7.5%) and ciders and spirit coolers (8.1%).
  3. The inflation rate for healthcare also hiked up a lot. Medical aid went up by 10.3%, doctors went up by 6.5%, dentists went up by 6.3% and medicines went up by 7.2%.
  4. As for education, primary and secondary school fees went up by 7.6% and tertiary education went up by 6.2%.
  5. Funeral services went up by 12%.
  6. Going on holiday has become a lot more expensive, especially package holidays deals. The increase is 24.4%.

Statistics South Africa measured the inflation increases from the period of August 2016 and August 2017. We’re very curious to know what happens in 2018.
