There are some winter days when you just want to snuggle under the blankets and watch movies. But what do you do when the cold continues to linger and the kids start to get restless cooped up inside? Here are a few fun, budget-friendly things you can do to brighten up even the dullest winter days.
- Build a fort
All you need is a few sheets and a bit of imagination to create a fairy castle, a troll’s cave, or a tent in the wilderness. Build a fort for each child and get them go visit one another – or better yet – link the forts with a tunnel if you have the space (and enough blankets!). The fort can even become a semi-permanent structure that can act as a reading nook or sleeping area to keep the games going for longer. - Action dice
Action dice is a quick and easy way to get the kids moving. Take two wooden cubes and write actions on every side of the cube with a marker. It’s a good idea to write “large” actions such as “hop on one leg” and “dance” on the one cube and “smaller” actions such as “sing” or “moo like a cow” on the other so that the actions can be combined easily. You can also add a third dice, which could indicate how long the action needs to be performed. This game is sure to end in fits of laughter – especially if the grown-ups join in! - Ten pin bowling
With ten empty plastic bottles, a bit of sand, a ball, and a hallway you are set to challenge the family to a ten pin bowling tournament! Create scorecards for each member of the family, and get the kids to decorate the bottles with markers, fabric, paint, or whatever you have on hand. If you want to make the game a bit more challenging, fill the bottles 1/3 of the way with sand to weigh them down. This will make them more difficult to bowl over. - Science experiments
Amaze the kids with some easy-to-do science experiments using household items. Show them how water can “walk” from one glass to another, teach them how clouds make rain, help them grow candy in a jar, or help them to make ice cream in a bag. - Dance!
It pays to be silly sometimes. Put on your favourite music and dance like nobody’s watching!
