Chakalaka – Estimated cost to feed a family of 5: R40

Ingredients:

1 large onion, chopped

1 large green pepper, chopped

1 can of baked beans

1 can of chopped tomatoes

2-3 teaspoons curry powder

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon ground cumin

Salt and pepper to taste

Oil for frying

Method:

  1. In a large pot, sauté the onions and green peppers in oil until they are soft and slightly browned.
  1. Add the can of baked beans and chopped tomatoes to the pot.
  1. Stir in the curry powder, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  1. Bring the mixture to a simmer, and let it cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded together.
  1. Serve with pap or bread and enjoy. 

Bobotie – Estimated cost to feed a family of 5: R80

Ingredients:

500g beef mince

1 onion, finely chopped

2 tablespoons curry powder

1 tablespoon apricot jam

2 tablespoons vinegar

2 tablespoons chutney

2 slices of bread, soaked in milk

2 eggs

Salt and pepper to taste

Oil for frying

Method:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.
  1. In a large frying pan, sauté the onions in oil until they are soft and slightly browned.
  1. Add the beef mince to the pan, and brown it over medium-high heat.
  1. Add the curry powder, apricot jam, vinegar, and chutney to the pan. Mix well.
  1. Add the soaked bread to the pan, and mix it into the beef mixture.
  1. Beat the eggs and pour them over the beef mixture.
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the egg has set.
  1. Serve with yellow rice and raisins (Optional).

Pap and Wors – Estimated cost to feed a family of 5: R70

Ingredients:

1kg pap (maize meal)

500g beef or pork sausages (wors)

1 can of tomato and onion relish

Salt and pepper to taste

Oil for frying

Method:

  1. Cook the pap according to the instructions on the package.
  1. While the pap is cooking, fry the sausages in oil until they are browned and cooked through.
  1. Heat the tomato and onion relish in a small pot.
  1. Serve the pap with the sausages and relish on top. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
