As with other popular holidays in South Africa, Easter weekend is definitely a money draining time of the year. Many people go on holiday, buy too much chocolate and have big lunches and dinners, leaving their wallets a lot lighter by the end of the weekend. We want to make sure that you don’t tap into any of your savings nests this year to fund your Easter Weekend.
Here are our tips for a fun, affordable Easter:
Reuse last year’s Easter Basket and Accessories
Why buy new Easter Baskets and Accessories every year when you can just reuse items that you already have, such as blankets and decorated egg shells. This will save you time, effort and, of course, money.
Buy last minute candy
Traditional candy, such as chocolate eggs and bunnies, is marked up super high before Easter. Very close to Easter, the prices will drop to ensure all the stock is sold out as soon as possible. Prices can drop over 50%! Make sure you shop just before the holiday to avoid the high prices.
Don’t buy the most expensive chocolate
At the end of the day, chocolate is chocolate. While we all prefer decadent imported Belgian chocolate balls, over Easter, so much chocolate is consumed that you may as well save the decadent chocolate for another occasion. Buy reasonable chocolate and wrap it up in colourful foil and paper – kids won’t mind!
Throw an egg hunt at home
Why waste petrol and money going to a planned egg hunt when you can make a simple, but fun, traditional hunt at home? Hide the eggs all around your home and yard. This is a super fun Easter morning tradition – your kids can wake up early in the morning and hunt for eggs while they’re still in their pyjamas!
Become super creative
Make your own Easter egg dye instead of buying a dyeing kit. You make cheap dye by mixing a few drops of food colouring, boiling water and a teaspoon of vinegar together. You can also make your own accessories, such as hats and baskets, at home by using old containers and decorations.
Make your own Hot Cross Buns
Nothing beats the taste and smell of homemade baking. Check out a delicious recipe for Hot Cross Buns here.
Keep your Easter meal simple
While it may be the time to put in more effort to make a special meal for your family and/or friends, you do not have to make it an expensive affair. A wholesome home cooked meal that is simple and affordable is good enough. Take a look at cheap, delicious Easter recipes.
We hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend!
