South Africa’s largest debt counselling company has said that the latest fuel price hike is pushing consumers deeper into debt.
The comments from Debt Rescue follow an increase of R1.34 per litre in both grades of petrol on Wednesday, while diesel will increase by between R2.94 and R3.15 per litre.
Debt rescue COO Annaline van der Poel said small businesses will be hardest hit by the increases, while workers continue to grapple with wages that are not keeping pace with inflation amid soaring fuel and paraffin prices.
She warned the likely outcome is further job losses.
