Have Your Say: How Would Interest Rate Increases Affect You?
South Africans remain increasingly concerned about the possibility of future interest rate increases and the impact this could have on already strained household finances. With the cost of living remaining high and economic uncertainty continuing, many consumers are worried about how any future increases could affect their ability to manage monthly expenses and debt repayments.
When interest rates increase, the cost of borrowing rises too. This means consumers with home loans, vehicle finance, personal loans, credit cards and other debt may face higher monthly repayments, leaving less disposable income available for essentials such as groceries, fuel, electricity and transport. Even small increases can place significant pressure on households that are already financially stretched.
Some of the biggest concerns around possible interest rate increases include:
- Higher monthly debt repayments
- Increased financial pressure on households
- Less money available for daily essentials
- Increased stress and financial anxiety
- Greater difficulty keeping up with existing financial commitments
To better understand these concerns, Debt Rescue is conducting a consumer survey focused on the possible impact of future interest rate increases. The survey aims to explore how consumers believe higher rates could affect their budgets, financial wellbeing and overall ability to cope financially in the months ahead.
Every response will help build a clearer picture of the financial pressures South Africans are facing. All responses remain strictly confidential, and no personal information will be shared or disclosed. The survey closes on Sunday, 14 June 2026.
