For many businesses, their biggest productivity challenges isn’t related to their systems, processes or technology. Instead, it’s the financial stress their employees carry to work every day.
According to the Momentum-Unisa Consumer Financial Vulnerability Index, more than 70% of South Africans report feelings of stress and anxiety when they think about their finances, while nearly three-quarters say they are constantly thinking about money. When financial concerns occupy that much mental space, they quickly impact concentration, engagement, decision-making and ultimately business performance.
This also leads to presenteeism – when employees are physically present, but too distracted to perform at their best. Employees may spend working hours dealing with creditors, searching for financial solutions or simply worrying about how they will make ends meet.
The effects don’t stop there. Financial stress has been linked to poorer mental wellbeing, increased anxiety, sleep disruption and lower morale. Over time, this can contribute to higher absenteeism, increased staff turnover and reduced team performance.
The good news is that employers can make a meaningful difference. Businesses that invest in employee financial wellness – whether through financial education, debt counselling support, employee assistance programmes or simply creating a culture where employees can seek help – often see benefits that extend beyond employee wellbeing. A financially healthier workforce is typically more focused, engaged and resilient.
As economic pressures continue to mount, forward-thinking businesses are recognising that supporting financial wellness is not simply a staff benefit. It is an investment in organisational performance.
