He noted a staggering increase in the portion of household income directed toward debt repayments, which has surged by 37% in two years due to relentless cost-of-living hikes.
High Food Prices Despite Fuel Cost Decrease
Roets noted the disconnect between dropping fuel costs and persistently high food prices, urging the government to tackle the drivers behind inflated prices of essentials. “This needs urgent attention on the national agenda,” he stated, as more than half of the population grapples with food insecurity.
With the anticipated petrol price increase in November, Roets warned that it could be “the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” further straining consumers already struggling with debt and potentially driving up transport and goods costs.
Roets stressed the critical need to remove South Africa from the grey list, cautioning that it significantly hinders economic growth and stability during a time when citizens are facing unsustainable financial burdens.
