Fuel and food price increases

SOUTH Africans should prepare themselves for the biggest price hike ever in the cost of red meat.
In a statement, economist Dawie Roodt said prices of red meat would rise between 50% and 60%.
“The prolonged drought and the increased prices of maize, which is the staple food for fattening beef, are the major contributors,” Roodt said.
Neil Roets, CEO of debt management firm Debt Rescue, said consumers should also prepare themselves for an increase in the price of petrol, which will be going up by 18 cents a litre.
“While many people will be going hungry, there is no prospect of famine which is being experienced in other parts of Africa thanks to the El Nino phenomenon,”‘ Roets said.
