January Fuel Price Hike Worsens Over-Indebtedness, Warns Neil Roets
Debt Rescue CEO, Neil Roets, spoke with The Citizen and shared his knowledgeable insights.
According to Neil Roets this marks another heavy blow for households struggling with escalating costs of essentials like food, water, and electricity.
Roets highlights that many consumers will resort to credit to cope, perpetuating the annual “Januworry” trend of starting the year with additional debt. South Africa’s latest Credit Stress Report shows alarming growth in credit reliance, with credit-active consumers increasing by 1.4% year-on-year and total loan balances reaching R2.47 trillion. Overdue balances have also surged, particularly in home loans (up 23%) and credit cards (up 9%).
Despite some optimism over a potential rebound in the Rand, economists predict sustained inflationary pressures in 2025. Roets warns that many households are already buckling under stagnant wages and slower income growth, with 25% of consumers reporting that their income does not match inflation. As a result, reliance on credit is growing, deepening financial strain.
Roets calls for urgent action from leaders to address the unsustainable reliance on credit, emphasising that millions of South Africans face the stark choice between debt and going without essential needs.
